In my previous post, I described the
bridge contest held during our kids' last science class at homeschool co-op this semester. The next physics challenge after the bridge contest was the "egg drop" competition. For this event, each class worked for several weeks during class time to build an egg protector out of popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and paper napkins. At the competition, each group of kids in K4 through 6th grade submitted egg protectors. A fresh egg was placed inside each egg protector and dropped from about 4 feet. If the egg cracked, then that protector was removed from the competition.

During the 2nd round, each egg and protector were dropped from just over 6 feet above the ground.

Only one egg protector managed to keep its egg in tact after both drops. This egg protector was submitted by the youngest class comprised of 4 to 5 year old kids. Our 4 year old son could hardly believe it when his team won!
