July 2014: New Challenges, Thoughts, and Snippets

Family Fun
I am not a spontaneous person at all, but when I learned around noon that it was Chick-Fil-A'a annual Cow Appreciation Day, I rushed to make costumes before picking up my daughter from drama camp at 12:30.  She changed clothes at the school and taped spots to our outfit on the way to CFA while singing Tim Hawkin's Chick-Fil-A song all the way there.  For the rest of the day, we all kept singing "[We're] in love with Chick-fil-A" as we could not get the song out of our heads.  And to ensure that the song stays in your head as well, here is a video with an extra verse added to the end just for Mr. Cathy.

I took the kids back again that evening, while my husband, who has dressed up as cows, ducks, and the Fruit-of-the-Loom grapes enough for his mom's shenanigans, enjoyed a quiet evening at home.

Cow Appreciation Day is a family tradition my kids enjoy, so I'm thankful for their willingness to serve free food and challenge families to make memories being silly together.  (Gift #649)

My son loves to feel grown up when his older cousins are here spending time with him. Yet, during every brief moment when he was alone with me during their visit, he could sneak over to grab a big hug or crawl up into my lap like a baby for quick snuggles. Oh that he would never outgrow his desire for affection from me. I'll take it whenever I can get it, even if it's only allowed when no one else is looking.  (Gift #650)

You know you are married to singer when every reply to everything you say all evening long is a lyric to a different song.  My husband always has a lyrical response for everything I say it seems.  I guess as an introvert married to a talkative extrovert, he finds the lyrical responses easier.

Parenting
I would like to welcome our newest employee to the "family business". Our golf ball inventory has never been so clean!   His official title is Quality Assurance Director and Initial Sort Line Supervisor.

The kids tend to misbehave more when their daddy is away on business.  My daughter never officially apologized for her latest act of disobedience, but she did make me this rose bookmark out of duct tape as a peace offering. (Gift #651)

To those with young daughters, this particular presentation makes some really good points and is worth sharing & discussing with your girl(s) if you haven't already. After seeing all the slides, my daughter said, "Wow, beauty really is in the eye of the beholder." Then we talked about how every image would still be very different even if Esther had only sent the image to American photo editors living in the same town. I asked her which edited pic she liked best, and she chose Israel which had fewer edits and still looked much like the original untouched photo. She also asked about the really pale skin reflected in some of the photos, and I told her how certain cultures judge a person's value by the fairness of their skin, and she was quick to point out the injustice of such prejudice.

Disasters and Mishaps
Between my own series of disasters with an entertainment center refinishing project, my son's decision to dump MANY buckets of water out of the bathtub upstairs onto the tile floor with the result of  flooding our master bedroom downstairs (flashback to the daily flooding episodes in our apartment last summer which had us waking up each morning to new crops of mold and soggy carpets), and misc other mishaps, the total damage / repair list resulting from just one weekend's disasters included:
  • Replace a ceiling
  • Caulk a new bathroom
  • Paint the garage floor to cover the current tie dye effect we have now as a result of various paint spills
  • Clean kilz off back steps or paint over it
  • Replace damaged clothes and shoes
  • Refinish a newly damaged bookcase
  • Administer first aid to wounds on elbows, arms, knees, and side
  • Schedule a hair appointment to cut all the Kilz cut out.  (Note to self:  There is a big difference between a $15 haircut and a $50 haircut.  Next time, spring for the $50 haircut!)
We're evicting Murphy ASAP!

While we were trying to stop, sop, and dry out a water leak from the 2nd floor into our master bedroom, our bunny decided to play hide and seek. Usually, she comes when I call, but after we spent several hours tearing up the house trying to find her and imagining every worst possible scenario, she finally appeared out of nowhere around 12:30 am. Why do I feel like we are always in some sort of emergency response training?

Kids' Ponderings
So my younger child has been begging for a male cat as our next pet. His reason this time? So the cat can mate with the female bunny and reproduce..who knows what. I understand the biological limitations here, but the potential object lessons to be taught through such an experiment, both biologically and Biblically are tempting. But he's only 7, and the cat might eat the bunny, so sorry, Bud.

Thinking he had it rough around here, my son asked me the following questions:

Boy: Did you get an allowance at my age?

Me: Yes, but it was 8 times less than you get now! (ha ha - he doesn't understand inflation yet)

Boy: Did you have to do all these chores I have to do?

Me: Yes, but without the aid of a miracle eraser, Roomba vacuum, and electric sweeper

Boy: Okay, but I bet Nana and Pops did not limit your computer/digital device time like you and Dad do to me.

Me: I DIDN'T HAVE ANY DIGITAL DEVICES!!!!

The comparison game never works!

First-born: "What is that lovely scent that smells a bit like peppermint?"

Me: "Ben-Gay"

Unfortunately, she did not like the scent of the tea tree oil in the Neuragen Gel I was wearing when I picked her up this afternoon, for Neuragen is much more effective. And the fact that I know the difference through experience is a tad depressing.  At least she likes the smell of Ben-Gay!

Lots of swimming and too little brushing will damage extra long, fine/stringy hair. But our daughter, like most other tweens, thinks her hair needs to be really long like Rapunzel's. So, I booked her an appointment at one of the most popular salons in town with the hope that the hip young stylists there could convince her to get some of the damaged ends cut. The stylist only took off a few inches, but my girl burst into tears when she saw the finished cut.

I think (and pray) she is realizing now that just as Rapunzel is a fictional character with hair that is stronger, longer, thicker, and healthier looking than anything close to reality (Rapunzel also never got to swim, dance, run, do back-handsprings, play on the beach, spend time with friends, attend parties, visit grandparents, ride horses, or laugh with loved ones while growing out all that hair!), every other photoshopped, cosmetically/surgically altered image she sees in the media or advertising is just as distorted, deceptive, and destructive.

What marvelous beauty God has uniquely designed into every sacred human life both on the outside and on the inside where true beauty begins. (Gift #652)

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight." (1 Peter 3:3-4)

New Job
I recently opened a new door to exciting, challenging unknowns in a very new ministry area for me. But now I must force myself to close other doors, and that is never easy for me.  I have cut back my freelance writing and tutoring work for now, but more cuts will have to come as well.  Maybe I should hire a maid?  :-)

I haven't seen one of these in over 10 years!

Recent Thoughts on Current Events, Trials, Faith, & Fitness
This month has been very hard.  I have stooped lower into the pit of depression than I can ever remember.  Praise God for His truth which enabled me to crawl back out!  (Gift #653)  Of course, taking bike rides to my favorite respite always helps too.  I don't get to go bike riding alone very often with the kids here with me all the time or the weather not cooperating, but when I do, it's so refreshing to come to my favorite nearby spot where my perspective always seems to get rebalanced. All those frustrations seem so trivial when I look up to the infinitely great, big, loving, powerful, and good Creator of all things. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The world is in chaos right now.  Our borders are being overrun by illegal teens on drugs, with criminal records, and/or carrying diseases.  They are coming here because our borders are not protected and our president wants to give them amnesty.  Our unemployment rate is soaring, and the poor working class who voted for our POTUS are getting smacked in the face as the jobs and resources they need will be scooped by the throngs of young illegals pouring into our country.  I watched videos last week of poor residents in Chicago complaining of all the murders, drugs, theft, and vandalism destroying their communities, but the gangs are growing in numbers now with all the illegals added to their groups, so if they think it's bad now, watch out because government trucks are bringing these kids to your neighborhoods!
As wars rage overseas with radical Shiite Islamist seeking to conquer the world with the very weapons our own government supplied, our allies are left abandoned because our government will not help them.  To Israel, the Ukraine, and far too many of our fellow countrymen, despite all the recent betrayals and/or neglect, more Americans love you, respect you, weep for you, and pray for you than the actions of those with the power may suggest. The ramifications (past, present, and future) are not pretty when one abandons her closest friends.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
America is more polarized politically today than she has been since possibly the Civil War. There are lots of theories explaining why, but I'm convinced much of it relates to the shift in our culture from being ruled by our minds to being ruled by our emotions. Instead of having meaningful discussions with well thought out explanations, we shut down all dialogue with emotional attacks. We all come from different backgrounds with unique experiences which shape our views on policy, and when different ideas are exchanged in a logical, respectful way, everyone benefits, especially when the best ideas grounded on truth on both sides become the focus instead of assaulting the other party. As responsible, educated citizens, let us engage in meaningful, respectful, loving dialogue with a heart that puts others before ourselves while removing all emotional attack words (which tend to be used in error and out of context anyway) from our vocabulary. Can we attempt a conversation without using words like "racist", "feminist", "intolerant", "hypocrite", "victim", "entitled", "privileged", "hater", "extremist", "Communist", "rich", "lazy", "kool-aid", "left-wing", "right-wing", "heartless", or "baby killer".  With so many crises all around the world and along our borders, we need to unite under our shared values and under what is true (since feelings often lie), for united we stand, divided we fall.

If the mind, body, and soul are all connected, then physical exercise preferences at any given time may be indicative of internal issues. Choosing specific types of exercise at different times may in fact be a remedy.

As a carefree young child, I preferred fun games and sports of any type. During the tween to teen years, friendships were my priority, so I most enjoyed taking really long walks (and talks) with friends. The late high school and college years felt like a series of races to the top of each new challenge, though I knew God's truth prioritized that which was sacred and eternal over all degrees, titles or accolades. That was my season of running 5K to 12K races at top speeds, trying to finish first in each new race. I also did a little rock climbing during those years. By my mid twenties, I was done with the rat race and wanted nothing more than to finish the race of life strong and faithful. I needed endurance to win the race that matters for eternity, so marathon running became my new passion, and those long runs were usually spent alone with God in prayer as He increased my spiritual, physical, and mental endurance.

Then I got married and stopped running races. I had been caught and liked it! I exercised on stationery equipment and ran for pleasure and for time alone with My Lord and Maker, not speed or distance.

The addition of children to our family brought sleepless nights, scar tissue, joint problems, and debilitating back and neck pain. I desperately needed strength and power! Weight training became my solace. With each pull-up, push-up, press, or curl, I found myself becoming mentally, physically, and emotionally stronger. The pains began to subside with occasional flare ups here and there to remind me that I will never be strong enough in my own might, so I must always wholly rely on Him.
Now I have reached an age where I am witnessing far too much injustice, loss, suffering, and corruption. On this earth, the rain falls on both the righteous and the unrighteous, but when I see the righteous suffering from diseases, abuse, oppression, or other vile injustice, it makes me ANGRY. I know I am powerless to change circumstances, so I pray to the One who can. These days, my exercise of choice is super high intensity martial arts training. To all who have asked me to pray for them recently over whatever cruel circumstance have befallen you, know that I am praying. I am also kicking, punching, and sprawling with a vengeance as an affirmation and as a way of metaphorically claiming our heavenly Father's promises to fight for you, restore you, and renew you. He will reward the faithful and right all wrongs! (Gift #654)

Thoughts on the Pro-Life Movement
The pro-life vs. pro-choice debate will eventually implode.  The more science reveals the facts...that a separate human life with a beating heart, pulsing brain waves, and every physical human component resides in the life of an expectant woman's body, the harder it becomes to call it a just a "fetus" or "blob of tissue".  Advances in ultrasound technology make it harder for a woman in a crisis pregnancy situation to agree to pull off the the cute little arm whose hand is waving at her through the ultrasound screen. And as horrific tales of gross abuses against children and women in abortion clinics continue to be exposed, abortion will not seem like such a loving solution after all.  Yet the media, government, and schools (ask me for specific examples!) continue all efforts to harden human hearts.

However, if we are to the win this war that has dismembered the bodies of well over 50 million innocent children since I was born in a world of emotional feminism gone insane, then we must take a different approach.  Images like the one below, while completely accurate in illustrating how horrific the abortion procedure really is, will change the minds of some abortion minded women, they will not address the root problem.
Most sane women do not wish abortion on anyone and certainly would not choose it unless they felt completely overwhelmed, helpless, and unsupported.  Based on testimonies from those who have had abortions and secret video footage by actors inside Planned Parenthood facilities, abortion providers prey on these emotions making clients feel like they have no other alternative while downplaying the life long negative impacts of that abortion on the hurting mom-to-be.
Pro-life advocates should choose instead respond to the debate by extending loving support to hurting women in crisis.  When I volunteered at a crisis pregnancy ministry (which was ironically located next door to an abortion clinic), our focus was always on the needs of each woman at her point of need. Oh, we were certainly concerned about the precious life she was carrying, but she was our first priority. Many women came to us by mistake, thinking we were the abortion clinic, but found what they needed most at our center.... hope, support, and love. For those who chose not to stay and immediately turned around and went next door for the abortion, many of them came back later for loving support and healing through our post abortion syndrome recovery programs. I'm happy to report that the abortion clinic next door eventually shut down.  Abortion is only a deadly band-aid when the real crisis is in the heart and soul of that woman. Let us love and support unconditionally, with respect and without judgment!  Deep emotional needs from gaping wounds in the heart are often at the source of crisis pregnancy.  Misinformation and poor role modeling combined with confusion over sound moral foundations in a world that has turned true morality upside down are also underlying factors.  Let us seek to help, not hurt these suffering women.

"Beyond the Samaritan woman's veil..[Jesus] saw the emptiness in her life that grew bigger with each divorce. Beyond the power and wealth of Zacchaeus, He saw a small man with a big hole in his heart that all the power and wealth in the world couldn't fill. Beyond the sores of Lazarus, He saw a soul of eternal worth. Beyond the clothes of the rich man, He saw a soul in rags." - Ken Gire

When we look at others, do we look beyond the surface through the windows of the soul?

Muffin's 4th Month

Our bunny is entering bunny puberty, which means she's wilder than ever, but even so, we love her more than ever.  She's so funny!

Her new favorite place to sit is on top of the sofa.

She particularly likes my decorative throw pillows which her sharp claws could sever into bits in a matter of minutes, so we're constantly training her to keep off.
But when we try to get her off, she assumes this adorable pose to soften us up a bit.
She also likes up hop up to the island.  When she hops up like this, I'm not sure if she is asking, "What's for dinner?" or offering to be our dinner.

 Here are a few random collages of our bunny's shenanigans this past month:
A bunny and her boy
She's finally big enough for harness so she went on her first walk/hop outside this month.

Our daughter took these pics in Muffin's playground and insisted I post them!

Grandparents and Grandchildren at OBX

The previous posts about Hurricane Arthur may have painted a negative picture of the family vacation, but the first few days the kids were there were absolutely beautiful. (Gift #646)
The sheer delight on the faces of these children will warm the coldest heart.  (Gift #647) I love to watch childhood (and Grandpa's) bliss in action.

I asked my MIL to line the kids up in the same order they were when we took a picture of them all at the beach 6 years ago and take an updated photo.  I was so pleased with the result, and though it was completely unplanned, I find it fascinating that each grandchild is looking in the same direction in the 2014 photo as they were in the 2008 pic.

The family got to hike up the Hatteras Lighthouse.  Ever since I wrote a lengthy history report about the coastal lighthouses in elementary school, I have dreamed of visiting them.  My kids got to realize that wish before I did.  Hatteras Island is America's tallest lighthouse at 198 feet, and they climbed all the way to the top!
Alas, all good things must come to an end.  We would never appreciate our sunny days if we did not have stormy days as our comparison, so in that sense storms are also a gift. (Gift #648)   By the middle of the week, the storm clouds rolled in close to the shore.

Family Evacuation: The Rest of the Story

After our evacuated family had rested and been fed, Grandma and Grandpa decided to head toward Memphis with the youngest grandchild (of the seven there) since his parents were missing him terribly.  We took the traditional group pics of everyone in their new beach T-shirts, and then they hit the road once again.
My husband's brother and his wife plus the four kids joined our family of four at Marbles Kids Museum. It was crowded with it being a rainy day and $2 admission hours, but we started from the back and worked our way to the front which helped us avoid the more crowded areas.  The kids could have spent all day in every room, and there are lots of rooms including a new power generation room I had not seen before.  My last full time job was in the power industry with an emphasis on renewable energy and demand side management, so that hands-on exhibit was by far my favorite.

Watching Uncle Mark design clothing for his paper doll after building a really fast car was perhaps the most amusing part of the day for me.  Mark is so talented from one spectrum to the other.  And seeing my husband in the kids' submarine made me giggle as well.  While I'm thankful for his service to our country, I'm glad to have him home serving as Officer-of the-Deck at our home and at the Children's Museum's submarine than off on dangerous 6-month deployments.

After a fun night of relaxing, eating lasagna and cheesecake, and watching the bunny's acrobatics, we all enjoyed a restful evening.  They left early the next morning for more fun adventures while we adjusted to only having the four of us in our house again.  It took me all the following week to finish laundering all the sheets and towels, but I would do it all again in a heartbeat to have family so near.

Hang Gliding and Such

After the kids left with their grandparents for the Outer Banks, the sudden change in decibel levels in our home was overwhelming.  It went from four adults and seven children to crickets chirping. Sometimes stillness and quiet is just tonic for the weary soul (Gift #640)!  We tried to tidy up a bit and prepare lunch for my husband's brother and wife who would be dropping in about 90 minutes after the first shift of guests departed.  They drove all the way from Oklahoma as well but without their four kids, so it probably felt like a honeymoon for them alone in the car all that way.   We enjoyed their visit very much (Gift #641) and were able to connect more easily without kids running loudly all around us.  She brought a housewarming gift she bought from a local artists' crafts store on the other side of our state.  I love the way the new book looks on our mantel.  It was the finishing touch we needed up there!  (Gift #642)

We had a great chat about family and life and went on a walk along the greenway beside the creek before they continued along their journey to Virginia Beach.

For the first time ever at this house, my husband and I were both home without kids, so we took the opportunity to take a bike ride along the greenway to the lake.  Just as we were arriving at the lake, God gifted us with a gorgeous sunset, (Gift #643) which helped make it the most enjoyable date we've had in a long time!

Low budget phone picture
We had planned on going sailing on that same lake the next day but discovered too late that sailing rentals do not operate during weekdays.  So, to ease our disappointment we booked reservations for hang gliding lessons later that week.

We spent much of our two days alone together purging the kids' rooms.  It wasn't fun. It was exhausting, frustrating, overwhelming and slightly maddening, but after throwing away over three garbage bags full of junk and reorganizing everything in there, I felt like a great burden had been lifted. (Gift #644) Too bad it will not stay that way.  We were glad we made time to clean out and wash sheets because those preparatory activities would come in handy later that week.

I did a lot of tutoring that week and prayed seriously about accepting a job offer at the kids' school to teach AP Statistics to 12th graders even though such a job was completely out of my skill set and comfort zone but those conditions provide a great opportunity for God's power to be displayed. (1 Corinthians 1)

As we packed our bags for our couple's getaway to Kitty Hawk and made plans to visit the Wright Brother's Museum, several lighthouses, and to hopefully catch a glimpse of wild horses running along the dunes, we watched the news fervently to track the movement and progression of tropical storm Arthur.  Our area has NEVER experienced a tropical storm of any magnitude this early into hurricane season.  Considering that a hurricane swept by us when the entire extended family were all vacationing in Disney World and that tropical storms crashed our family's last beach trip in this area and that tornadoes blew through during another family visit, we would find it very bizarre if Arthur turned into anything serious.  We took it with a grain of salt but joked about how our hang gliding experience could blow us right into the arms of Jesus where we would meet the Lord in the air.   (1 Thess. 4:17).   On my Facebook status that day I wrote:
"Recent weather maps showing Arthur looking more like a hurricane than a tropical storm during the time when we had planned to go hang gliding has me second guessing the timing of our lessons. My husband insists that it will 'barely be a hurricane'. Is that like being barely pregnant? He's excited about the hang times Arthur's winds will give us, while I'm wondering if I'll just glide right into eternity."
We just happened to follow the state news & weather reporting truck most of the way to Kitty Hawk and considered that to be strike #1 against us.  When we arrived at the state park for our hang gliding lesson, the hurricane warning flag was blowing aswinds were picking up.  Strike #2!
We went inside to make sure our lessons were still a go, and there we bumped into an anchorman from The Weather Channel.  Strike #3!  At least he stopped long enough to take a selfie with my hubby.
After getting the thumbs up from the hang gliding crew (not just the one from weather channel guy as shown in the above photo), we went out for a power lunch since we knew we needed fuel to climb up those dunes over and over again.  We sat through the training class and then began the arduous hike across the dunes to our flying site.  They chose a dune further away due to the increasing wind speeds.  I kept watching the clouds as we hiked the dunes, and they certainly did seem to be changing as Arthur grew nearer.
Views from the Wright Brothers' Playground and from our hotel balcony
We had come this far, so we weren't backing out now.  We were all suited up and ready to fly, and my husband volunteered to go first with me right behind him #2 in line.

As we were assuming our T-Rex stance and were all ready to hang, the instructors noted the wind speeds and changed things up a bit.  The winds were too powerful to glide solo.  In fact they were too powerful to glide with one instructor holding the ties down while running along beside us.  The winds required two instructors per glider just to keep us from gliding off into the sunset or perhaps right into Arthur's eye.  Each student got to feel the lift and sail down the dune once, but it wasn't quite the same with an instructor on either side of us holding the glider down.  So they gave us all wind checks and told us to come back another time.  Do what?  We drove all that way and paid for a nice hotel just to turn around and go home?  Humph!

Husband Goes First

My turn
(Those marks on my legs are KT tape from yet another injury.)

By the time we had each finished our one pseudo flight, the three hour window was up anyway, so we rushed back to find out if any tourist attractions were still open, given the constant beeps on our phones announcing hurricane warnings.  Everything on the island and all the neighboring islands had  closed except for Bodie (pronounced "body") Lighthouse.  So we raced to it arriving about 30 minutes before they closing time.  It did not shut down due to winds because all the steps were indoors, but tours to the top shut down right before we arrived, not because of the hurricane but because the heat index at the top soared over 105 degrees.  Lovely.  At least we could walk inside and look up and walk around the island.  It's a lovely little area and made me feel like I had traveled back in time.  The winds were rough, though, as Arthur rolled in closer, and I looked like the Stay Puft Marshmallow with all that wind in my shirt and shorts.

By then, we were calling our trip a total dud but felt like God gave us a little mercy by getting us placed in an ocean front room in the hotel which was a free upgrade for us. (Gift #645)  We dropped our bags, washed the sand out of every crevice of our bodies and clothes and went out to eat at a seafood dive that offered a simple, bar style atmosphere with loud noises from the TVs overhead and the sounds of dishes clanging in the kitchen.  Raw fished glared at us from behind a glass window where we picked whatever fish we wanted them to cook for us.  I'm not accustomed to eating $20-$30 fish on paper plates with plastic forks, but that's the beach for you.  It didn't taste that bad for that kind of money, I expect a little ambiance.  And since I loathe bars, I guess it is no surprise that we were seated on uncomfortable stools at the bar.

Near the end of our dinner, my husband received a call from the family. They were being evacuated from their beach house at Avon.  We had a decision to make.  Would we meet them at the highway ramp near us to give them a key to our house (or call a neighbor to leave them the extra key), or would we give up our nice hotel room and drive back to greet them at our home when they arrived at 3:30am?  We opted to give up our expensive room without regrets.  We got home around 2:30 am (what a long day), just in time to feed the bunny and prepare beds and pallets to sleep 13 people (my husbands brother and sister-in-law had joined the family at the beach house by then).

We woke up groggy with splitting headaches as rains from the tropical storm belted down outside.   But at least I could laugh at the irony of all our family vacations getting hindered by tropical storms.  I fear our Oklahoma relatives will not ever want to come back!

Oklahoma Came Here This Time!

It was such a pleasure to have my husband's family come visit us this year (Gift #639) instead of us flying out there as we have every year, up to three times a year since we were married. His parents were very brave to  drive five of their grandchildren all the way out here from Oklahoma. (The oldest is in college and the youngest is a newborn, so they could not come.)

Ready to leave Oklahoma!
7 out of 9 grandchildren all together at our place!
The kids played so well together, and the house sure did ring out with peals of laughter.  The boys built Lego creations and marble runs, while I won the twins over with Nutella.  The entire family played many rounds of checkers on the handcrafted checker set Grandma's youngest brother made for us as a wedding present.

We took the crew to our new pool the evening they arrived.  A DJ played lots of fun dance songs, so the kids boogied down the diving board and twirled to the music with Grandma.  The kids played water basketball and did aerial stunts in the water while my daughter and I participated in an impromptu diving competition with a new acquaintance on the higher diving board.  Little Witt was a brave boy to go off the diving board with the big kids.

After they spent a day and night at our house, Grandma and Grandpa took our two kids and one of our cars since two vehicles were required to seat all 9 of them and kept on trucking toward the Outer Banks.

Independence Day 2014

It seems that every year I find myself grieving for our country more and more.  The utter moral depravity permeating our country makes me gasp.  Moral relativism seems to rule the decisions of young people with whatever feels good momentarily being right in their owns eyes despite the long term destruction that will result.  (Proverbs 21:2)  Critical thinking skills and common sense are conveniently lacking when what is logical (and known to be right deep down in the gut despite all efforts to suppress it) hinders the pursuit of one's own sinful lusts.

Over the past six years, it seems a dark shadow has been cast upon America. Instead of seeking God's will, His righteous, and His lordship over our land, our nation's leaders slander America to other nations, sowing the greatest discord and division our country has seen since the Civil War.  Through gross overreaches of power, our executive branch has mocked the U.S. Constitution, one of the most brilliant documents ever written after the Bible, bullied those who oppose or disagree with the executive agenda regardless of how illegal it may be, illegally spied on fellow citizens, allowed four courageous Americans serving faithfully overseas to die in a brutal terrorist attack which could have easily been prevented, freely given weaponry to terrorists who want to kill us, run guns across the border to drug cartels resulting in more loss of life, expanded welfare to record levels while increasing the unemployment rate to the highest since Carter's tenure, called acts of common sense, patriotism, and integrity "racism" because they have no argument to support their actions, denied religious freedoms and mocked those who fight for such freedoms, proliferated lies,  freed terrorists putting unknown numbers of lives at risk out of personal self-interest, covered one scandal after another, hidden documents that should be free access to the public to cover secrets that could incriminate, made a mockery of all that is sacred in America, squandered natural and financial resources, crippled the economy, placed future generations in a bondage of debt that cannot be repaid, and sought to remove sacred American liberties.

America has been a beacon of freedom to the entire world since it's inception.  If America continues to allow corrupt power grabbing and progressive socialistic ideals to continue stealing the liberties that have been defended (often to the death) by patriots for the past 238 years, there will be nowhere else to flee.  America is the world's last hope for freedom and prosperity.  Will we throw it away?  Oh how I pray we will return to a rational thinking and love for liberty.   May Americans learn to think for themselves instead of merely accepting whatever lies and new age ideas the media feeds them.  Such babies our citizens have become...easily bought with a few free handouts without realizing they have made themselves slaves to an oppressive master for their mere survival.

Even so, America is still the best place to live in the entire world, and she still stands for freedom. I will celebrate every last shred of freedom we have until it is gone, but I have not lost hope.  What made America GREAT can make her GREAT again!  Jesus Christ is the hope for all the world, and He came to set us free.  America was founded upon Biblical principles and faith in God.  May the light of freedom never die in America, the home of the brave, and the land that I love.

So with those thoughts on my mind while suffering through day three of a brutal headache with painful muscle spasms running from my neck to the bottom of my shoulders (my chiropractor was closed for the holiday weekend), we skipped our original plans of spending the 4th downtown listening to concerts and enjoying all the amusements followed by the fireworks.  Instead, we drove to a shopping center parking lot (for a quick medical getaway if necessary) where we could watch a fabulous fireworks show tailgate style with several thousand people in an upscale area that seems to do everything first rate.

We got there early to find a parking spot and had plenty of time for several rounds of Spoons and Hearts.  I won the match, and now we know where our daughter gets her competitive spirit.

Then we enjoyed a fabulous show while thanking God for placing us in the USA.

Tae Kwon Do

On a whim, we registered our kids for Tae Kwon Do classes this summer.  We felt like the discipline and self-defense training were valuable life skills they should have.  At the second lesson, my husband, who was previously trained in karate, signed up for lessons as well, so it became a great family activity.

Our daughter doesn't get to go to classes as often because of swim team practices every evening, and I can't make time for lessons because I have to manage all the shuttling of kids to various activities, but it has been a fun outlet, particularly for father and son.  Their belt testing, which I attended, lasted several hours, and their belt awards ceremony lasted even longer.  It's fun to see them perform their new skills, but it certainly is a commitment of time, money, and focused attention.  Now that all three have their white belts, the guys will continue with regular lessons, while our daughter will go when she can between swim team and gymnastics team commitments which are the higher priority for her right now.  It would not surprise me if my husband continues all the way to black belt.
I am very impressed with the discipline and values taught at TKD.  I had to laugh when the students were asked to correctly state their mother's birthday as part of the testing requirements for the first belt.  While I was initially concerned that some Eastern mysticism may creep into the training (another reason why it's good to have their dad there to correct any teaching that contradicts God's holy word), but so far the values drilled into them at class have been values we have tried to instill in our own children (honesty, integrity, respect for authority, sanctity of human life, etc.).

Master Lee is highly regarded by the martial arts community.  He was the Coach and Manager for the U.S. National team for the years 1992 through 1995.  He has been featured on several magazine covers and has received honorary citizen awards repeatedly for his contributions to the local community.  It's worth driving to the adjacent town to be trained under such a skilled, caring, and humorous instructor.  He takes a group to Korea every year, so I have a suspicion a trip to the other side of the world may be in the future for our family.

Master Lee played lots of games during the belt award ceremony.  One game was a shouting match between the TKD kids' fathers. My husband commands our home in a way that never requires raising his voice or yelling, so imagine my surprise when he seemed like a natural when called upon to perform in the shouting contest. It must be his past military training.

Big news and little tidbits from June 2014

This biggest news of the month is that we welcomed a PRECIOUS new niece into the family.  She's my husband's closest (in age) brother's daughter  This brother's two daughters are currently the bookends for the grandchildren with his firstborn being the oldest and his newest addition the youngest grandchild.  His first daughter is GORGEOUS, so we were not surprised by his newborn's breathtaking beauty. He's over the moon in love with her, and I cannot wait to meet her!  They decided to name her his and my husband's great-grandmother who passed away not long ago.  How fitting that she was born on Grandma Sophie's birthday!  Sophie Grace, you are such a miracle and a precious gift from God. (Gift #630)

We continue to adjust to our new town of residence and are making new friends.  Our daughter had a blast at a birthday party at the ice-skating rink with many of her favorite school friends. Since the rink was so far away, I took some work with me and decided to stay for the duration of the 3.5 hour party.  Fortunately, one of the other moms I admire for her strong faith and wisdom sat at the table with me, so instead of working, I got to know her better and exchange mutual encouragements in matters of faith and parenting.  What a blessing it was to have that unplanned time with her. (Gift #631)
Two of her closest friends are pictures with her at the lower left.  Giovanna is in China right now.  She is at the top of the class academically and was a great motivator for our daughter during her adjustment to the school. Syan's mom was an awesome T.A. for our son's class last year, and I have very high regard for her as well. .
I also enjoyed getting to know the birthday girl's mom.  She will have daughters in 12th grade, 5th grade, and kindergarten next year. She shared some amusing tales of parenting teens and gave me some helpful ideas.  Having her spend time with us was another unexpected blessing. (Gift #632)
This ice-skating rink lost money on this party.  Not only did they provide a party room, skate rental and 3 hours of skating, but they also supplied all the decorations, face painting, pizza, ice cream, drinks, favors, paper products, several hosts to assist, and clean-up.  It was awesome.  Our daughter's favorite prize was a light up mouth thing.  She scared a lot of people with that thing.

Now that the kids are out of school, the house isn't as quiet during the day, and I've enjoyed having company in the kitchen.  The kids are growing more independent and make their own breakfasts and lunches now (Gift #633), but they never seem to remember to clean up the mess they make in the process.  At least I don't have to cook as often as I once did!

Much of the kids' summer has been spent either at Tae Kwon Do or at the pool. The kids have also enjoyed other pools during playdates with friends living in the nearby capital city.

We have so much to celebrate this Independence Day week!  Other big news on the national front is that the Supreme Court for issuing two huge rulings that upheld the Constitution and the freedoms that countless brave patriots have sacrificed so much to preserve.  (Gift #634)  Religious freedom was protected in the Hobby Lobby vs. Obamacare case (Kudos to Hobby Lobby for risking everything to stand for religious freedom!), and the abusive, economically destructive union power grab was finally pushed back in an Illinois health care workers vs. unions case. These rulings were close (5 to 4), so the American freedoms established by our founding fathers are still very much at risk, but we will celebrate the victories no matter how small or large.
The kids had a blast at Super Summer Adventure this past week.  SSA is our church's version of VBS, and the church does a fantastic job.  (Gift #635) We also host neighborhood SSA clubs around the community at church members' homes.  I volunteered in the kitchen with food service (which included long hours shopping at BJs for more food than I could fit in my fridge/freezer so I had to shuttle food across town to different fridge/freezers), so I did not get any pics of our kids enjoying all the fun activities.  I especially wish I had pics of them on the inflatables the last day.  Here is one photo collage of our son with one of his best friends from church and that friend's sister who is our daughter's age.  The boys are in a Y Guides tribe together this year, and Victoria was in our daughter's tribe for three years.  We have so much respect for this family.
Wes, husband to the food service director I served under and singer in the choir with my husband, was the drama director for SSA.  He took a 1/2 day off from work every day that week to serve at SSA and stayed up until 5 am some nights writing the script.  His family serves our church family tirelessly, and I count it a privilege to work under and alongside his wife at our kids' school. (Gift #636)

They live only 2.5 miles from our new house, so it was a such a blessing to find new neighbors who are also active (in many of the same ministry roles) at our church (especially since we live in a different town than most of our church members) who also send their kids to the same school where the mom teaches.  Connecting with them and having her recommend me for various jobs at the school has been such a clear display of God's hand leading us.  (Gift #637)

Our bunny has grown much more comfortable in our home.   She still doesn't like to be held, but she tolerates it and has developed the same desire to have her head scratched as her predecessor.  She seems more friendly and has some serious speed as she tears around the house or does her aerial acrobatics.

Since our daughter kept leaving us "Top 10 Reasons to Get a Dog" lists with one item being so she could take the dog on walks, we got the bunny a walking harness and leash instead. Our animal loving daughter spent a long time trying to wrangle the baby bunny into the harness while heaving many frustrated sighs. Once the bunny was finally in, we took these photos, and then the bunny hopped out of her arms. Before Miss Muffin (aka MC Fluffy) hit the floor, she was out of the harness!

Bunnies are binary creatures. They are either off or on. When they are on, they are full throttle. When they are off, they are out. Here is our Muffin before and after her HIIT Agility workout.
As with our previous bunny, my husband has a unique way of gaining first place in our pet's heart.  I love this series of photos showing the different moods Muffin may express in a five minute interval and how he wins her over with the head scratch.  I think the photo at top left looks like an album cover. They just need a guitar in there somewhere.  They could call themselves DJ (or DC for those who have read our love story) Jazzy Jeff and MC Fluffy.  Only those raised in the 70s & 80s would get that allusion I suppose.

A few quotes I came across this month that inspired and/or made me think (Gift #638):
"Don't believe everything you think." (Jerry Bridges)

"Glorify God by enjoying him - he is a truer and better award than the adulations of our children, of other women, and even of our own self approval." ( Gloria Furman)

"But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord;
I will wait for the God of my salvation.
My God will hear me.
Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy.
Though I fall I will rise;
Though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me."
(Micah 7:8-9)

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses

Helpful Links on Parenting & Cultural Issues:
I wrote a series of articles a few years ago about pool modesty justifying my points with Scripture, quotes from various men, and philosophical understandings about self esteem and the differences between how men and women think. But this video references specific Princeton research utilizing brain scans to show how immodest dress objectifies women while modest dress empowers and esteems women. It's worth the 9 minutes it takes to watch it.

This concept of dads "dating" their daughter's boyfriend is absolutely brilliant. It's a must read for Christian dads with daughters.  Read the article here.

One of my biggest concerns with sending our kids to a private school was that a materialistic worldview of some false prosperity gospel may seep into their hearts.  Thankfully, the school is diverse, and materialism is not pervasive there.  Yet, it is important to keep leading our children to the truth that true blessedness is not in the form of possessions.  The Beatitudes teach quite to the contrary:
When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.  (Matthew 5: 1-12)
I love the way this concept is described in this article.
