We love our country and our freedoms! We also love watching fireworks!
We tried to take photos of the fireworks last night with our new camera in manual mode. We used a pro's tips for the settings, a tripod, and the timer. All the settings should have been correct, but we must have accidentally bumped the focus ring during the show without realizing it because none of the photos (pictured above) were in focus.
We had an amusing discussion with our 7-year old during the show. We did some star-gazing while waiting for the fireworks. She pointed out the Big Dipper but accidentally called it the "Big Diaper". Then when the fireworks began, she asked, "Will the fireworks blow up the Big Diaper..I mean Dipper?"
Clearly I need to teach her that fireworks only rise about 1000 feet while the stars in the Big Dipper are 139 light years away from the earth. Instead of providing that useful information, however, I merely replied, "While diapers may occasionally blow out, they will not blow up and neither will the Big Dipper".
The kids came home with lots of questions about how fireworks are made. Thankfully, their second cousin has an ATF license and sets up fireworks displays on the side. He posted behind-the-scenes photos and videos on-line this morning. The kids were amazed as they watched his video clip of the fireworks launching like rockets with deafening booms. The following photo shows him with a 10" mortar that launches 14 lbs of explosive. He said that the charge required to shoot this mortar could level a house.
I will close out this post by sharing the pages I quickly put together for the kids' scrapbooks using photos from the celebratory event we attended last night.
