Mom taught me that thoughtfulness is extremely important when raising children. She understood how fragile an adolescent's sense of self esteem can be. She also knew that when balloons or flowers were delivered to a student at my school, the recipient's name would be announced over the school intercom so that the entire school would know that someone loves that person enough to send her flowers/balloons. At that age, however, receiving tokens of love from one's parents would have been humiliating, so Mom always signed the cards with mysterious initials so that no one would know that she had sent them.
When I traveled to Japan at age 17 as a student ambassador, my mother tucked notes inside each outfit in my suitcase so that I could receive a word of encouragement from her each day I traveled.
During my 4 years in college, she regularly sent me notes, gifts, or even little post-it notes to encourage me and to simply remind me of her love and support. She put notes in Dad's suitcase when he traveled as well. It's the little acts of thoughtfulness that will mean the most to our children when they are grown.

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
